Everyone is asking about the “spike,” so I’m going to tell you what I know, even if I can only paint an incomplete picture at this point (until I speak to someone in the know).
We did great! A LOT of people pre-ordered. In fact, a lot of people have been pre-ordering (I noticed when I printed out a report), especially on the weekends! 
Keep in mind that I suggested that folks order “on or before” February 14th. I know that this sounds like a counter-intuitive way to create a “spike” but I couldn’t imagine everyone remembering to order all on the same day. And, as I suspected, lots of people chose to order before rather than wait until the 14th.
So before the 14th, the numbers went way down (down is good) and then on the 14th, the numbers started climbing back up into the normal realms of books that are not yet released. It’s been climbing steadily (but not too quickly) since yesterday.
So I’m happy. We did get to number eight on Friday on the New & Recent Releases Writing Reference Bestseller list on Amazon and I think that’s really good.
In fact, I think it’s awesome.
When I know more about the impact of our “Amazon slide,” I will report it all right here. I’m hoping to speak to someone at Writer’s Digest who is in the know tomorrow.
Also, since so many did order before the 14th, I’m going to allow until Monday, February 19th for everyone and anyone to turn in their sales receipt via e-mail at writermama@earthlink.net.
