2008 Resolution/Second Book Update

I’ll tell you what, when you set an intention and act on it consistently, it’s amazing how quickly you will get results. That’s what I teach in Writer Mama, How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids, in my classes, and in my presentations. But it’s nice to apply those same proactive principles to other areas of my life and witness the transformation.

For example, simply from exercising four times a week (while I watch Oprah!), I have lost about five pounds. I look better. I feel better. And this just motivates me to keep exercising.

Notice, how I’m not hyper-analyzing it or becoming obsessed with dieting or losing weight. All I did was start exercising, incorporate it into my daily routine, and I’m seeing results.

At four o’clock, I simply say, “Oh, time to exercise.” And one day a week I get to take a pass, which is nice to either save for the end of the week or use if I have an appointment or something.

I’m even adding additional exercises over time to increase the results. Because, as I always say, results lead to results.

Speaking of results, we are eating healthier because I am cooking more. We are shopping less because we are buying in bulk for the month at the local discount supermarket instead of Costco (where we always spent more than we needed/wanted to). We get some healthy frozen option from Trader Joe’s (we’re a small family, so we can get away with that) for nights when I don’t want to cook (which still happens for one reason or another). And this provides flexibility for when things come up, which is nice to have.

I’ve worked out a positive childcare situation for my daughter since her childcare provider stopped taking part time kids last June. She stayed home for the summer, but in the fall, since we chose a half-day Kindergarten instead of full-day (which suits her better) I needed to find more help. I was not able to get all of my full-time job done with her home half-days (actually more because “half-day” is a misleading description). So I found a neighbor who does in-home childcare for two afternoons a week and a friend, who I offered to pay (because I’d have to pay someone else if not her), to watch my daughter three (soon to be two) afternoons a week.

Samantha is very social by nature and she’s happy to have these opportunities to see so many friends each week.

Of course, things will change, they always do. But by knowing what my priorities are, I can identify and address my needs, ask for help, and keep my eye on my priorities.

On a sidenote: I’ve been tagged for memes and am receiving a high volume of networking e-mail over the past weeks. Please bear with me while I am under my 60,000-word deadline. I take a great deal of pride in my work, which work goes through many stages and revisions, and it doesn’t look like I will be doing much “socializing” online or in-person until classes start mid-February. Sorry!

I’m looking forward to announcing the winner of the first Writer Mama Scholarship tomorrow, though.

I just wanted to share that I’m working hard and I’d love to hear how you are too, and what kinds of results you are seeing, so far, in 2008.

Healthy Habits / Resolutions Update

Okay, time to see how I’m doing on my promises to myself. I’ll tell you why in a minute.

These were my ten simple self-care steps I committed to making a habit in 2008:

1. Take a daily vitamin

How I’m doing: I forget this a lot and it’s important, because I am a little anemic. So I’ll use one of the pill thing reminder things.

2. Drink more water

How I’m doing: Better. But need to fill the water bottle I bought and keep it by my desk. More exercise is helping me drink more water.

3. Drink fresh juice or Superfood daily

How I’m doing: This is tough because would have gotten it at Costco and we’ve sworn off. I’m finishing up the last jug of Superfood now. And again, I forget to take it. Should take it with my vitamins.

4.  Eat more veggies

How I’m doing: Doing a little better. Need to keep more options handy.

5. Exercise daily (30 minute minimum)

How I’m doing: I’ve been consistently exercising four days a week. I think this is a good goal for now instead of five days because I get fatigued if I try five in a row. And I’ve lost a few pounds!

6. Keep up with doctor and dentist appointments

How I’m doing: Well, this is what I was going to tell you. I’ve actually been to the Opthamolgist three times in the past week because of a wierd lump on the white of my eye. It’s not eye strain. It’s probably part of an autoimmune reaction because I had so much stress, illness and travel over the holidays. Have to go to the M.D. next to get a blood test and make sure everything okay. Hopefully it’s not an auto-immune issue. Good thing I’m already making an effort to be more healthy!

7. Take a monthly day off and just read when most tired

How I’m doing: Been resting on Saturdays, the traditional Jewish day of rest (Sabbath), which is our preference. We usually like to get ready for the next week on Sundays when many people are taking their day of rest. Need to keep this up even with my heavy writing schedule lately.

8. Schedule more “work meetings” with friends ;)

How I’m doing: I’ve got one this weekend. So pretty good. This is a tough month for these. I’ll start schedule for February.

9. Take more baths

How I’m doing: Could stand to do this more with Epsom Salts. Will shoot for a couple nights a week.

10. Indulge in occasional extras like massages, manicures and pedicures

How I’m doing: Did this last weekend. No worries there. ;)

This is helpful for me. So thanks for listening. I want to make 2008 my year to get healthy!

How about you?

Resolution Two: Be More Like a Housewife from the Fifties

Okay, obviously I’m being a little tongue in cheek about this but bear with me.

One of my goals for 2008 is to cook more tasty home-cooked meals, to keep our place cleaner, and to keep all of our personal records in good order.

I work hard on my career but sometimes things get out of balance on the home-front. In 2007, we spent a record amount of money (for us) on take-out, eating out, and—yep, you guessed it—Starbucks.

What’s the solution? We let our Costco membership run out. That was another source of financial drain. Even if we saved money on a few items, we spent so much more on things NOT on our list that it’s just not worth it. So the discount supermarket is looking like a better, though less trendy, way to save.

We stocked up on ingredients for lots of winter comfort food. And it’s working…I’m cooking more and wanting to go out less.

Which reminds me. Know any good, tasty winter recipes? I’m a little bored with all of our old stand-byes. Favorites for me are soups and anything you can stretch to last for more than one meal.

By the way, resolution number one is going great! For some reason bouncing on the trampoline is fun enough that I don’t dread my workout. I feel stronger, happier, and very up to date on afternoon talk shows. :)

Not everyone is thrilled about my workouts, mind you. The dogs lie on the floor and look forlorn like why can’t I do this outside with them? But I just bounce/jog/twist on!

And I’ve already lost a few pounds. Hooray!

How’s your 2008 exercise routine going? Has everyone gotten back on track?

Self-Care Goals for the New Year Meme

I think it’s time we start talking about our goals for the New Year, don’t you?

And, then I thought, why not make these discussions memes so everyone can post their list in their blogs and spread the wealth? So here we go.

Up first, self-care. I’ve learned my lesson. I’m going to be scheduling self-care rituals into my routine because I’ve proven that the busier I get, the more my self-care inadvertently goes to the bottom of my list.

So, these are ten simple self-care steps I commit to making a habit in 2008:

1. Take a daily vitamin

2. Drink more water

3. Drink fresh juice or Superfood daily

4.  Eat more veggies

5. Exercise daily (30 minute minimum)

6. Keep up with doctor and dentist appointments

7. Take a monthly day off and just read when most tired

8. Schedule more “work meetings” with friends ;)

9. Take more baths

10. Indulge in occasional extras like massages, manicures and pedicures

Okay, your turn! What’s your self-care plan for the New Year? I’m not going to pick anyone specific because I know most moms need to be asked about this.
