Follow Up About Being “Nice”

Never deny your instincts to “be nice” to someone if you sense danger…was the message on The Oprah Winfrey show yesterday (which I saw during my workout).

I thought it was fascinating to hear the expert on the show, Gavin De Becker, author of the book, Gift of Fear, say that perpetrators rarely get the best of a woman who isn’t swayed by the external pressure to be nice.

Also, I appreciated the author’s suggestions on how to keep your kids safe. I recently learned that a neighbor’s daughter was nearly molested by a friend of their family.

It’s always shocking and scary to learn something like this, but I think what all parents want and need to know is how to prevent it from happening in the first place.

So, let’s all read this article.

This guy is really sharp. I would echo Oprah’s recommendation that all women read his book and give it to their daughters, especially if they are going to college or leaving home.

I was surprised to hear him say that restraining orders often don’t work well and can exacerbate violence in many circumstances.

This seemed like the beginning of an important discussion about and among women.

Food for thought, mamas. It gets me through my workout!

Are You Too Nice?

And even more importantly, is being too nice getting in the way of your success?

I’m not saying be abrupt or rude to the folks in the biz. That’s not what I’m saying at all.

What I am saying, is that sometimes the way we interact with the people we encounter in everyday life will stop our success in its tracks.

Take this quiz to find out if you are even a little bit too nice.

And then come back and tell us: Are you too nice and is being too nice getting in the way of your success?

Monday Forecast: Snow?

School was canceled today for a threat of snow. Here’s hoping! 🙂

Samantha and the dogs would be thrilled. My husband is home (because he’s a teacher) and doesn’t mind the wet and cold. So, come on snow!

Let’s see, I have three deadlines, two zines to edit/post, and my book deadline to juggle this week…no problem, right?

Please check out the “pages” that come with this blog. See those little tabs up above? I recently added one called “Markets.” Anything else you’d like to see up there?

It’s six a.m. and time to get to work! Have a productive week, mamas!

P.S. Only ONE spot left in the Writing and Publishing the Short Stuff Class that begins on February 13th.

Writer Mama Scholarship Winner

Wow, ladies, that was a tough job. But I am pleased to say that after hours of consideration I have chosen a recipient of the very first Writer Mama Scholarship.

Drumroll and fireworks, please!

The recipient of the first Writer Mama Scholarship is…

Maureen Schuster of Mableton, Georgia

Hearty congratulations, Maureen!

To everyone who submitted an application, I just want to say that it was a very competitive group of writer mamas to choose from and it was not an easy selection process AT ALL.

I wish I could give everyone who applied a scholarship! Certainly everyone was worthy, but I’m going to hold myself to my  word and wish everyone good luck next time around.

You are welcome to keep applying. The next round of scholarship applications will be accepted from Sunday, March 9 – Saturday, March 16 (only) for the April 16th Writing and Publishing the Short Stuff Class.  I will post an announcement with the application on Friday, March 8th.
