The Write Attitude: Form a Support Network

Jennifer ApplinBy Jennifer Applin

“Guess what? I’m going to be a writer!” Will this declaration to your closest family and friends lead to cheers of enthusiastic support? If you are like me, the answer is yes, and no. The same people who sing your writing praises may become your biggest critics when you announce your intent to use that talent. When you are discouraged from dealing with unreceptive people it is time to form a supportive network.

Putting together your own personal cheering section will help you feel confident and maintain a positive attitude. This will prove invaluable when dealing with the rejection newbie writers often initially receive. Meeting other fledgling writers on forums or in writers’ groups is a great way to hear words of encouragement from those in the trenches. Together you can create an atmosphere of fortitude, which will benefit you both.

As tempting as it may be, don’t keep the Negative Nellies out of the loop. Chances are those with a discouraging attitude are really just looking out for your best interest. A great way to handle this is to turn their cynicism into fuel for your motivation. Setting out to prove them wrong may be just the push you need to succeed. Also, addressing their concerns is a smart way to compensate for your weaknesses. Forming a supportive network consisting of a devoted cheering section, while feeling determined in spite of skeptics, is great motivation in making your writing dreams come true.

Sharing your writing career progress with family and friends who are confident you will succeed can be an important boost right when you need it. Although they may not understand the specific challenges with breaking into this business, their unwavering assurance can help you forge ahead.
