One Scholarship Available for the February 13, 2008 Writing and Publishing the Short Stuff with Christina Katz

[Corrected at 8:46 a.m. PST, Monday, January 14, 2008. See new dates in bold and my decision to limit geographic area.]

The deadline for your short application is one week only: Sunday, January 13 – Saturday, January 19, 2008 at midnight. Please read the guidelines completely and double check your work. The recipient will be announced by midnight, January 26th here and in The Writer Mama zine.

Please feel free to spread the word about the scholarship, even if you do not intend to apply.

Only one scholarship is available per WPSS class. This is for the class that begins on February 13. If a class is canceled by the instructor, the scholarship is transferred to the next class offered.

This is a full scholarship. The recipient commits to participating fully in the class, delivering all six assignments on time. Please do not apply if you cannot make the commitment to participate in the class. The scholarship is not transferable if you fail to complete the class. The class is also not transferable in the case of illness, family emergencies, a move, etc.

The scholarship is only for moms, not soon-to-be moms. The scholarship comes from Christina Katz. No other extra or special attention is offered with the scholarship. It’s up to the scholarship recipient to make the most of the opportunity offered. Please note that this is a scholarship, not a Giveaway.

What is written in your application is considered private and will not be shared or sold. Your contact info will not be shared or sold.

The scholarship recipient will be announced in this blog and The Writer Mama zine by midnight, January 26th. To learn about future scholarship opportunities (three more this year!), please subscribe to The Writer Mama Zine in the upper right-hand corner of this blog (click on the envelope).

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received. Send your application to: “writer mama 2 @ earthlink dot net”. This is the only email address for the scholarship. Save your application for future scholarships, if you want to apply again. The application is subject to change.

Copy and paste the questions below into an email though you must be able to create and read Microsoft Word documents (no exceptions) to participate in the class. Also your application should not exceed one page in 12-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced in a Microsoft Word document. So you may want to write it in Word and then transfer the text to an email.

The scholarship recipient will be chosen based on the following criteria: Enthusiasm, Demonstrated effort, and Need as determined by Christina Katz. No one else will view your application.

This time around, I’m only accepting applications from U.S. residents. Wow, this is a tough call, and I reserve the right to revisit it each time I offer the scholarship. Thanks for understanding.

Here’s the application (copy and paste it into a Word doc, do not exceed one page, then copy and paste your final application into an email):

Have you read the book, Writer Mama?

How long have you been reading the WM blog?

What version of Microsoft Word software are you currently using?

Write a paragraph in response to the following quesitons:

  1. Please write one paragraph about why you want to take the class, Writing and Publishing the Short Stuff
  2. Please list in paragraph form any publication credits you’ve had thus far by publication name and date only. Briefly list any other experience you think is relevant, also in paragraph form.
  3. Please say why you are unable to afford the tuition for the class at this time (see note below).

Please Note: The Writer Mama Scholarship is only for moms who legitimately cannot afford class tuition for whatever reason. So if you work at home, earn money, receive money for whatever reason, or your spouse or partner earns enough money for you to afford the class, please do not apply for the scholarship.

To register for the class as a non-scholarship candidate, please visit:

When the class is full an announcement will be made on this blog.

Post any questions about the scholarship to comments but, generally speaking, just do your best and send in your application according to the posted guidelines.

I’m pleased to feel successful enough to be able to offer one free class per semester to a deserving mama. Good luck!

Thank you so much for this great opportunity. I cannot wait to begin my application. However, I just wanted to clarify the deadline and announcement dates. They should be January, not February, right?
Apllications accepted Jan 13-19, then winner announced on Jan 26?

Thanks for your note, Christina. Now that I reread your email, it looks like your answer was the name of the journal/magazine/whatever in which your work was found, and not the name of the actual piece of work that was published there. After initial confusion, I just sent my application with both things included. I’m sorry for the bother!
